Welcome to ScholarScan (the "App"), published by OXVENU ("we," "our," or "us"). We are committed to protecting your privacy and ensuring that your personal information is handled in a safe and responsible manner. This Privacy Policy describes how your information is collected, used, and protected when you use our App.
ScholarScan does not require an account, does not show advertisements, does not offer in-app purchases, and does not include third-party analytics, advertising, or tracking SDKs.
Information We Collect
Local Data Processing (Scanning, OCR, and Documents)
ScholarScan is designed with privacy at its core. Document scanning, Optical Character Recognition (OCR), on-device translation, highlights, notes, and bundles are processed and stored locally on your device.
We do not upload or store your scanned pages, imported PDFs, exported files, or annotations on any server. The usage statistics shown in the App are calculated on your device and never leave it.
AI Translation (OpenRouter, Anthropic, OpenAI)
ScholarScan can translate text with AI through OpenRouter, an AI model routing service. AI translation is only used after you agree to it in the App, and you can switch to on-device translation at any time.
- Only the text you choose to translate (a selected passage or the text of the current page) is sent to OpenRouter. Your scanned images and PDF files are never sent.
- OpenRouter processes the request with Anthropic's Claude model. If that model is unavailable, OpenRouter may use OpenAI's GPT model as a backup.
- The translated text is returned to the App and stored only on your device. We do not store or log the content of your translation requests on our own servers.
- If AI translation is unavailable (for example, without an internet connection), the App translates on your device instead.
Please refer to OpenRouter's Privacy Policy, Anthropic's Privacy Policy, and OpenAI's Privacy Policy for details on how they handle data.
Optional API Keys You Provide (OpenRouter and Google Gemini)
You can add your own OpenRouter or Google Gemini API key in Settings. Keys are stored only on your device in the iOS Keychain (or Android Keystore) and are sent only to the provider they belong to.
- With your own OpenRouter key, AI translation requests are made with your OpenRouter account.
- With your own Gemini key, you can choose to re-run OCR on a single page with Google Gemini. When you do, the image of that page is sent to Google's Gemini API. Please refer to Google's Privacy Policy and the Gemini API terms.
arXiv Import
When you import a paper by its arXiv ID or URL, the App requests the paper's metadata and PDF directly from arXiv. We do not intermediate or store these requests. Please refer to arXiv's Privacy Policy.
Other Network Requests
- On-device translation models: When you download an offline translation model, it is downloaded from Google's servers by Google ML Kit. Translation itself then runs on your device.
- Fonts: The App may download its typefaces from Google Fonts.
These requests do not include your documents or the text you translate.
How We Use Your Information
We do not collect personal information. Text you send for AI translation is used only to return the translation to you.
Data Retention and Security
Because your documents, OCR results, translations, and annotations are stored locally on your device, you maintain full control over this data. You can delete documents at any time in the App, remove stored API keys in Settings, or delete all data by uninstalling the App.
Data sent to OpenRouter, Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, or arXiv is retained according to their respective privacy policies.
Children's Privacy
The App is not intended for use by children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13. If we become aware that we have collected personal data from a child under 13 without verification of parental consent, we will take steps to remove that information.
Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update our Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by updating the "Last updated" date at the top of this Privacy Policy. You are advised to review this Privacy Policy periodically for any changes.
